Book Review – Marcia Kester Doyle’s Who Stole My Spandex

May 19, 2015 Off By Lisa

Everybody has that friend.

You know the one. The friend you meet for the lunch date that ends at 5:00 PM when your husband calls wondering if you’re stranded in a ditch somewhere. The friend you can talk to about anything, because we all need to bounce those topics off of someone else for comparison’s sake. Just to make sure we’re not completely insane.

Marcia Kester Doyle’s Who Stole My Spandex is a lot like that lunch date. One story rolls seamlessly and hilariously into the next as Doyle shares the ups and downs of middle age and menopause. By the end of the book, Doyle is a lot like that friend with whom you can discuss absolutely anything, including all manner of bodily functions – yours and everyone else’s.

We get to know the members of Doyle’s family in sweet and funny detail as she covers everything from parenting teenagers and preparing for an empty next to surviving flu outbreaks, bad neighbors, and department store dressing rooms. The tone of the book is easy and friendly. You’ll find yourself completely drawn in, wanting to read the next anecdote and then the next until there’s nothing left but the back cover. But the book is also easy to pick up whenever you have just a few minutes for a good hearty laugh.

Doyle’s stories are filled with just the right amount of self-deprecating humor. Her observations are honest and accurate; you’ll laugh out loud not because she points out her own anxieties and shortcomings, but because you’ve experienced them as well. And after you’ve laughed until you cry, you’ll find yourself nodding along knowingly as Doyle draws the sweetest of life’s lessons from the hilarious memories.

Doyle paints a smart and funny picture of life as a middle-aged, menopausal mother. But you don’t have to be middle-aged or menopausal to appreciate the delicious humor and poignant sweetness of Marcia Kester Doyle’s Who Stole My Spandex. Marcia’s stories are everybody’s stories. They are the things that happen to all of us.  If they haven’t happened to you, they have very likely happened to your mother, your aunt, your grandmother, or the new BFF you made in line at the drugstore while comparing brands of vitamin supplements.

And if you haven’t quite hit middle-age and all its joys? Don’t get too comfortable in the smugness of your youth. Your day is coming. Happens to the best of us.
