“Here’s where you punch in and out,” said Bob, “and you’ll be up in the rig until your shift ends, so take your lunch up with you.”

Ned punched his card and followed the foreman to the building site, hesitating at the sight of the crane towering above the high-rise.

Freak accident, they said, could never happen again.

“You’re not afraid of heights are you?” asked Bob.

“No, nothing like that,” Ned croaked as he began to climb the scaffolding to the operator’s cab.

Moments after he strapped himself into the seat, Ned heard the growl and watched, frozen in horror, as the claw bared its metal teeth and lurched at his cab.
