A Perfect Compromise
“You’re perfect,” he breathed into the emptiness between them.
In that instant, it was over.
Over because of course she wasn’t, and never could be, perfect – not for him, not for anyone. Nor did she want to be. Perfect only proved this was far removed from anything like essence or actuality.
She moved closer and whispered, “So are you,” grateful for his closed eyes and the cold October rain.

You made it!!!!! Perfect!!!! Hahaha! Cool story. In those moments its so much easier to go along than tell the truth….and luckily eyes are often closed so you can get away with it!!!! Ps i love being referred to as the lovely ivy….
Well you are the lovely Ivy!
This is not quite the moment of brilliance I experienced this morning before my eyes were open or my feet were on the floor. Same concept…but there was a sentence that was (if you’ll excuse, please) perfect in the middle. Sadly, I just could not retrieve those words again. My creative genius was interrupted by a minor morning kid-related crisis. 😀
Glad to have made it in, even if it wasn’t quite the way I planned.
My creative “genius” also makes its appearance right before waking in the morning. And sometimes is interrupted by an electric razor, and sometimes remains elusive though the day.
Mine’s elusive a lot lately…
Perfection is vastly overrated. We become lost if that is all we strive for. Often we find it long after we have had it with us for some time already.
I agree, Old Egg. What seems “perfect” is often very wrong. And it’s so subjective, isn’t it? Who defines perfection, really? That’s where it gets really tricky.
Yup. Those 2 words would have me running for the hills! Nice come back.
But kinda depressing, huh? the story?
Yup, this one’s a bit depressing. But a little twisted, too, perhaps?
Oh, it is, but it immediately had me imagining the characters and what the situation was. Especially, the female:) I love that! You delivered just enough to allow the reader to be able to create any/all scenarios possible.
You have to wonder about her…she is upset by his use of the word “perfect” regarding her, but throws it right back at him. The question is why…
one might be better to consider the attribution of being ‘perfect’ more as a curse… in the sense of a verb, to curse a person with the inflicted responsibility of being ‘perfect’
Curse is a good word, Clark. The woman here sees his declaration of her perfection as a distinct negative – she doesn’t want it. In her mind, it negates anything else and seals the deal on the end of the forward motion of the relationship.
It is perfect how you view perfection.
Hmm…I think that is making me think hard this morning. 😉
Great story, Lisa. If perfect is actually imperfect, impossible and unattainable, let’s all relax.
That’s a good plan, Val!
