Waiting for Sandy

October 29, 2012 Off By Lisa

Well, here we are. Our hatches are battened. Our emergency kit is filled. Our pantry is stocked. We are Boy-Scout-style prepared.

We are ready.  Sandy, bring it on!

So far, we still have power and are just sort of going about our business like any other bad-weather day. As long as the power is on, the laundry is getting done and we have time to catch up on some paperwork and de-cluttering chores. Some of us have taken naps (mostly the Rotten Cats) and some of us are getting a bath or shower in before we potentially lose hot water (not Rotten Cats).  Others are spending the afternoon tormenting those who are napping.  Pretty sure if Kidzilla pokes Cat One in the head while he’s napping one more time, there is going to be a smackdown.

The latest headline on Weather Channel says,

HURRICANE SANDY’S DEVASTATION IMMINENT.

Can’t lie – this one is a little frightening, maybe just due to the sheer size of it. Schools and businesses are closed Monday and Tuesday. Everyone is closing up and hunkering down.

We are safe and warm and thus far things have been relatively quiet. But the wind is picking up – the tree outside the front window just bent wildly back and forth like one of those balloon stick people you see at car dealerships. We are up on top of a small mountain and relatively exposed so the wind sounds particularly loud and powerful.

But even so, things are still relatively normal other than a slight agitation of spirit present due to the hovering anticipation. But even so, we are taking advantage of the God- and Nature-induced period of respite.  I do think, though, that we are in for a long night of watching and waiting; I suspect sleep will not come easily for many.

My Mother prays when she can’t sleep; My Grandmother always did, too. I believe that will be a good option as the roughest hours tick by. There are many who are not safe and warm; there are many who do not have adequate supplies or shelter in times like these – or any other. There are many who are frightened and alone with no one to keep them company or offer comfort on stormy nights. So when the inevitable cabin fever sets in and we have all hit our patience threshold, I will try to keep that in mind.

We are blessed to have the chance to be locked in the house for a few days together and drive each other nuts. Not everyone is so blessed.

Be safe and well.
